Back for More

So, I got an email from B&J's ChunkMail service (which should be sent more often), informing B&J Nation that Pumpkin Cheesecake, a wonderful Fall flavor is coming back for a short run. Add it to your shopping lists.. you hear me !!

Melted Pies

Folks, run don't walk to get a limited batch pint of "Snickerdoodle Cookie", which is a little like "GingerSnap" - same ginger bite, caramel ice cream, wonderfully textured. Funny how their chocolate-based concoctions aren't always my faves; I prefer their flavors that are more like melted pies.

Not How I Planned It

I somehow lost the lid to 'Berry Voluntary', which would make it difficult to include it in my re-fashioned photo album for B&J ice cream lids.
Of course, the genesis for this is that I need to get spaces for more lids, since the album is full. But, instead, I think I'll just get another similar album for lids - New and Old Testament, as it were.
In the next wk, I'll add the (if I can find it) BV lid, the Brownie Choo Gooder lid and the Snickerdoodle Cookie lid. Wow, don't lead an exciting life?

Back for More

Searching for new or untried flavors notwithstanding, I often purchase 'older' B&J flavors, because I like them so much. High on this list are Key Lime Pie, Cinnamon Buns, One Sweet Whirled and S'Mores.

The Big W

After dropping off my daughter at daycare today, I drove to WalMart to see if they stocked any "Flourless Chocolate Cake" pints. Not only did they not, but they didn't have ANY B&J flavors. I suppose I'd need to visit one of those Super Duper Walmarts. There's one maybe 15 miles from here, which is officially in schlep territory. Not sure I want to make that drive JUST for a flavor, but you never know.

To sleep, perchance to...

Sometimes, I literally have dreams that I'm in a different city (usually NYC) and I come across B&J flavors that not only hadn't I tried, but that I didn't even know existed.
This isn't necessarily an unfounded premise. I can count about 5-8 of the many flavors I've tried that were NOT part of a new year's batch, whose existence seemed a little kismet-ish. This is why I still visit the ice cream section of stores I go to. You never know.

Last night, when I visited WholeFoods, I saw a new flavor called "Snickerdoodle Cookie", which I thought was only available in scoop shops. Tonight, I learnt that Walmart carries a Walmart-only Limited Batch flavor called "Flourless Chocolate Cake". I think I've been to Walmart maybe 3x in my life; the last time was to get quick items that I was giving away to a homeless shelter. I suppose I'll have to visit one; there's one maybe 5 miles from my house, but NOT on my commute. Alas...

79 (or 85) and counting

Last night, my wife and I polished off a pint of Berry Voluntary, which is flavor number 79, I think. Or maybe it's 85. I don't know.

Outside of Plan

I do have some non-B&J flavors I'd like to try. Both Wegmans and Target house brand of ice creams have some intriguing flavors, as does Safeway.

Yes, Michelle, there is a flavor...

I tried Berry Voluntary yesterday, which was quite good, but with a warning. It's important to find the white chocolate chunks. The raspberry flavor and berry swirl are nice, but the texture is really manifest if you are able to land a chunk in your spoon.

Awaiting..

I have the 2 new summer Target flavors in the freezer, Berry Volunary and Brownie Choo Gooder. Haven't opened either one. Can't say when I will.

I've got (late) mail

A few yrs back, Ben and Jerry's started an email service called Chunk Spelunkers, which was ostensibly their way of sending out mass emails to some of their most faithful and interested fans.
It's a great concept, but it's very badly realized. If I'm on that email list, shouldn't I hear from them about the latest flavors? I never do. I just happen upon them, every so often. I think I maybe get 3-4 a year, but they're most interested fans probably already know what's in it.

A-Z

One of my other deep, deep life passions is my bar trivia team, the Agoraphobics Night Out.
Started in 2002, the team plays weekly (often more) at various MD-area bars.
Today, we won our 5th regional title, which is pretty good odds. Way to go.

Ice Cream Sommelier

More than once, I've stood beside someone who was looking at the B&J assortment in a freezer section and have offered them advice on which flavors to choose. I don't recall if they asked me or if I just offered this info (Knowing me, the latter).
I hope I gave them the right information. I'd feel guilty if they didn't like my choice.

Josh

Today, this blog honors the memory of Josh 'Yoshi' Isaac, who passed away far too early. Time will not weaken our memories.

Short on Daylight; Long on Daydreams

Each year's new flavors arrive in February, along with the harsh realities of winter. There's an interesting contradiction there - ice cream, the quintissential summer food coming out in the coldest (usually month).

This year's flavors were Dulce Delish, Milk and Cookies, Boston Cream Pie, Mud Pie and Peanut Brittle.

What's interesting about this annual hunt for new conconctions is that the store in which I find them is always changing. Sometimes, it's Shoppers FW, other years Giant, once it was Safeway. Royal Farms markets sometimes carries varied flavors, but not always. Wegman's tends to carry a great selection of B&J sorbet.

About This Blog

Hello - my name is Michael. I live in Baltimore and this blog is about my enjoyment of Ben and Jerry's pint ice creams and my attempt to surpass having tried 100+ different flavors. This all began in 2002 when I saw one of them (either Ben or Jerry) speak at a fundraiser type dinner.

I somehow got the idea to try as many of their flavors as possible. As of August, 2010, I have tried somewhere around 70.

Each time I try (and finish) a new flavor, I cut out the lid and put it in a photo album. I used to write a few comments about each, but that became a little tiresome, so I stopped it.

Summertime News

Saw (and bought of course) 2 new 'Exclusive Batch' flavors from Target - Berry Voluntary and Brownie ChewGooder. This is a partnership between B&J and Target and VolunteerMatch.org, I believe.

This isn't the first time that B&J have had partnered with a large conglomerate on flavors. A few years ago, they offered a flavor called Triple Caramel Chunk available only at Walgreens. I envision the B&J folks being much more a Target-like company than a Walgreens connection.
